ArtReach School Tours and Workshops

School tours, presented by specially trained docents, are offered between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Tours may last from 45 minutes to one hour. The optional related workshop is 30–45 minutes. School tours and related workshops are free.

Look, Listen, Discover (Grades Pre K–2)

What sound does the color red make? Can you move like a jagged line? Students explore the elements of art through sensory experiences and storytelling to discover new places, people, animals, and cultures. A related clay sculpture project in the Gallery’s workshop further enhances this interactive encounter with works of art.

Artistic Adventures (grades 3–5)

What stories do artists tell us through their work? Become an art detective and discover the meaning of symbols, messages, and historical references. By exploring art from many times and places, students enhance their skills for identifying the elements of art and constructing narratives. The interactive tour is followed by creative storytelling and a related studio art project.

American Stories (grades 6–8)

What do storm clouds in a painting say about a country’s political climate? How does sculpture reveal the influence of current events? Students investigate social studies and culture through the narratives presented in American works of art. This interactive experience includes discussion, writing activities, and a studio art project. Pre-visit with docents subject to availability.

Through the Artist’s Eye (grades 9–12)

Students discover how identity and cultural context influence artists’ choice of media, subject matter, and style. Works of art are explored through comparing and contrasting the elements of art found in each. This experience is enhanced by discussions with Corcoran art students in the College’s studios. Students create a color silkscreen print to explore their own artistic vision.

The minimum for group tours is 8 people; maximum 75 people. One adult chaperone is required for every 10 students.
The Public Education department will contact you to finalize details. Your tour is not reserved until you receive a written confirmation by mail or e-mail.
