Gwendoline and Margaret Davies: Pioneer Collectors of Modern French Art

To mark the opening of the exhibition Turner to Cézanne, Oliver Fairclough, Keeper of Art at Amgueddfa Cymru, National Museum Wales and curator of the exhibition, will discuss the Davies sisters and their motivation as collectors. Members FREE; public $10 or complimentary with museum admission.
Turner to Cézanne: An Evening with Corcoran Scholars

In an intimate evening of art and history, Paul Greenhalgh, director and president of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design, and Beatrice Gralton, Evelyn S. Nef Assistant Curator for Contemporary Art, will present behind-the-scenes stories and images from the exhibition. The lecture will take place at the Alden Theater in the McLean Community Center. Cézanne in Provence: A Painting's Trajectory

Nancy Locke, associate professor of art history at the Pennsylvania State University, will trace the trajectory of Paul Cézanne’s masterpiece, The François Zola Dam (c. 1877-1878). See how this fascinating painting—once considered part of Cézanne's ongoing "research"—influenced the history of early 20th-century art. $15 General; $12 Members.
Impressionism and Politics: The Cases of Pissarro and Renoir

Join Richard Brettell, Margaret McDermott distinguished chair of art and aesthetics at the University of Texas at Dallas, as he considers the cases of two painters—Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. On this enlightening evening, Dr. Brettell will discuss the "politics" of each artist and relate their respective political ideologies to their art. $15 General; $12 Members.

J.M.W. Turner was one of the most celebrated 19th-century painters, and the source of deep fascination both to his contemporaries and subsequent generations of artists, critics, and biographers. Don’t miss Gillian Forrester, curator of prints and drawings at the Yale Center for British Art and formerly Volkswagen Turner scholar at the Tate Gallery, as she traces Turner’s extraordinarily rich career and investigates his intriguing personality.

Capturing Clouds
Family Program (ages 8–12)
Saturday, February 27, 1–2:30 p.m.
Head up to the clouds for a sky high tour of the special exhibition Turner to Cézanne. Find shapes in the skies and learn to identify nimbus, cirrus, stratus, and cumulus clouds. Down in our studio, paint your favorite cloud formation using acrylic paint on canvas board. Don’t forget to paint the silver lining!

Painting Fundamentals
Aspiring Artists Classes (ages 13–16)
Saturdays, February 27–March 27, 1–3 p.m.
Students learn the basics of acrylic painting including brush handling and care, paint mixing, and palette organization. Inspired by the special exhibition Turner to Cézanne, students gain an understanding of how to approach paint.

Hurry to the special exhibition, Turner to Cézanne, to catch colorful sunrises of pink, purple, blue, and orange. This workshop explores the internationally acclaimed collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art on view, including masterpieces by Paul Cézanne, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, J.M.W. Turner, and Vincent van Gogh. Join us to explore some of the key stylistic innovations that shaped the art of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Modern Art, Modern Life and the Idea of Modernism—Clarifying what “Modern” Means Across the Curriculum

Explore and discuss en plein air techniques in Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales, an internationally acclaimed collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Rula Jones leads participants in outdoor sketching activities. Materials for this workshop are included. No prior drawing experience is necessary. Registration is required. Members: $20; Public: $30.
