A Capital Collection: Masterworks from the Corcoran Gallery of Art
This book showcases more than 100 great works, from Rembrandt Peale’s Washington Before Yorktown to Aaron Douglas’ Into Bondage. Organized by theme—Identity, Narrative, History and Imagination—the works are introduced by insightful chapter texts, written by leading art critic Eleanor Heartney. Descriptive entries by Corcoran curators and guest authors accompany each of the works from a broad variety of media, from cast bronze to video installation.
Several acclaimed authors were invited to share their unique perspectives on works from the Corcoran collection for this volume. Architect Frank Gehry, feminist scholar bell hooks, columnist Angus Phillips of The Washington Post, acclaimed author William Least Heat-Moon, and veteran civil rights activist Congressman John Lewis react to the chosen masterworks in enlightening and entertaining ways.
