Drawing Fundamentals

Aspiring Artists Classes (ages 8–12 or 13–16)

Basic drawing skills are necessary for the creation of virtually all kinds of art. This course covers contour lines, shading, and composition through traditional still­ life studies in the classroom as well as work on view in Sargent and the Sea.

Aquatic Art

Aspiring Artists Classes (ages 5–7).
Sundays, October 4 through November 1, 2009, 1–2:30 p.m.
Public $170; Members $135
Study wonderful organic forms from the ocean like fish, coral, and seashells. Using colored pencil and watercolor, make drawings and paintings inspired by Sargent and the Sea.

Creatures of the Deep

Family Workshop (ages 8–12).

Dive deep into your imagination and unlock the marine mysteries in Sargent and the Sea. Sailing in the wake of John Singer Sargent’s trans­atlantic journey, discover what hides beneath the surface and dwells on the bottom of the ocean floor. Back on land in our ceramics studio, sculpt a one-­of-­a-­kind aquatic creature out of clay.

Introduction to Watercolor

Aspiring Artists Classes (ages 13–16)

Watercolor is one of the most difficult painting mediums to control, but gives some of the most delicate and beautiful results. After sketching works in Sargent and the Sea, students learn how to mix color, apply washes, and create effects unique to watercolor.

Ships at Sea

Family Workshop (ages 8–12)
Saturday, November 14, 2009, 10:30 a.m. –12 p.m.

Hoist the sails and leave port for the wide open sea as we journey across the Atlantic Ocean in the exhibition Sargent and the Sea. Grab your binoculars and stay clear of the shipwreck in the distant waters! Following your tour, capture your favorite ship from the exhibition in charcoal and pastel.

Waterscapes

Family Workshop (ages 8–12)
Saturday, December 19, 2009, 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.
Public $12; Members at the Family level and above $8
Be dazzled by sparkling patterns on water as you tour the exhibition Sargent and the Sea. Discover why the subject of water has intrigued artists such as John Singer Sargent for centuries as you spot colors and patterns on a glassy harbor, shimmering tide pools, or a wavy ocean. Then dry off in the art studio as you paint daubs of color onto canvas to create your own waterscape.
