Internships

The Corcoran Gallery of Art offers internships for graduate and undergraduate students. Based on a program of supervised learning, Corcoran internships provide students with an opportunity to learn about museum operations and to pursue academic and professional goals.

Academic-Year Internships

The Corcoran offers academic year internships (September–May) to juniors, seniors, and graduate students. To correspond with class schedules, interns can arrange flexible work hours (approximately 15–25 hours per week). Interns during the academic year work on substantial research projects, which contribute to the Corcoran’s programming. Internships are available in the following curatorial departments: American Art, Photography and Media Arts, and Contemporary Art. Internships are also available in ArtReach, Conservation, Continuing Education, Development, Education, Exhibitions, Finance and Administration, Graphics, Marketing, Membership, Public Programs, Public Relations, Registrar’s Office, Special Events, the Corcoran Library, and the Corcoran Shop. Students desiring academic credit for their internship must make appropriate arrangements with their college or university. The Corcoran can offer no stipend.

Fall 2010 application deadline–July 30, 2010

Summer Internships

The Corcoran sponsors a 10-week internship program from early June through mid-August. This program is open to juniors or seniors in college, graduate students, and students between academic degree programs. The summer internship program is explicitly geared toward those students who are interested in gaining firsthand museum experience or intend to pursue careers in arts administration.

Weekly panel discussions with Corcoran department heads offer interns the chance to gather information about all facets of the museum and to learn about the backgrounds of seasoned and successful museum professionals.

Interns also visit other Washington arts and humanities institutions to view special exhibitions, tour permanent collections, and meet with museum professionals. Corcoran staff consider interns’ personal interests, capabilities, and future career plans before assigning them to individual departments. Internships are available with the following curatorial departments: American Art, Photography and Media Arts, and Contemporary Art. Internships are also available in ArtReach, Conservation, Continuing Education, Development, Education, Exhibitions, Finance and Administration, Graphics, Marketing, Membership, Public Affairs, Public Programs, Registrar’s Office, Special Events, the Corcoran Library and the Corcoran Museum Shop.

Summer interns maintain regular staff hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Corcoran can offer no stipend. Students desiring academic credit for their internship must arrange for it themselves with their college or university.
