Internship Departments
Internships are available throughout the year in the following departments:
American Art Curatorial
This intern assists with any coordination of American Art temporary exhibitions and the permanent collection galleries, in addition to daily responsibilities in the Curatorial department.
College Exhibitions
This intern works with the Coordinator of College Exhibitions to organize, install, and de-install student shows in college exhibition spaces. This intern gains experience developing upcoming exhibitions by having direct involvement with the process.
Conservation
This individual works with the Conservator on current conservation projects and administrative duties as assigned. This applicant must be enrolled in a Master’s program in conservation to be considered.
Contemporary Art Curatorial
This intern assists with upcoming Contemporary Art special exhibitions or permanent collection galleries, which includes research, writing, and daily administrative duties in the curatorial office.
Continuing Education
The CE intern assists the Director of CE in coordinating the continuing education program. Continuing Education classes consist of short courses, individual courses, and the pre-college portfolio development program.
Design
The Design intern works with the Design team in an administrative and creative capacity to develop projects for the museum and college. It is preferred to have an applicant with a graphic design education.
Development & Membership
Interns in the development and membership office engage in a wide variety of projects, including research, strategic initiatives, and daily operations. Interns can expect to receive basic training in the Raiser’s Edge, volunteer at day-time and evening programs for our Members and donors, become versed and communicate institution-wide products by managing the membership hotline, as well as learn the values of an office that engages in fundraising with individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies.
Director’s Office
The Director’s Office seeks to work with interns who are passionate about the arts and can communicate professionally with Corcoran staff, donors, and the Board of Trustees. Special projects will be assigned related to the current work of the Director and President.
Education
- ArtReach
The intern in this department is expected to design experiences that engage underserved youth in artistic and critical thinking using the Gallery’s collections and special exhibitions as a primary resource. It is necessary for this individual to understand the facets of museum and community engagement through educational programming, which requires the applicant to be pursuing a degree in art education. - Audience Research
This intern will work with the Director of Education studies to develop and implement audience research. The data will be interpreted throughout the internship. - Interpretation
The Interpretation intern works with the Director of Interpretation and the Coordinator of Student and Educator Programs to maintain the exploration gallery, research and prepare materials for upcoming educator resources, create studio projects connected to school tours, assist with docent activities, and research the aspects of collection . - Public Programs
This intern assists with the research of future public programs, supports any programming logistics, and archives past programs in the database. Applicants with a background in programming and event planning are encouraged to apply. - Youth and Family Program
Interns in this department assist with the preparation and logistics of the Studio D program, Camp Creativity, family workshops and family days, and children’s birthday parties. Applicants with elementary education backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Interns in the finance department assist with daily operations of a not-for-profit organization. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in the management and integration of the museum and college business practices.
Information Technology
The IT Intern works closely with the IT Director in documenting the current infrastructure, as well as assisting with writing, editing, and proofreading of IT documents. This applicant must have strong writing skills and interest in technology.
Library
The Corcoran Library offers interns the opportunity to gain valuable experience working in an art museum and college library setting. Library interns will be exposed to library research concepts and skills that can be applied back in their academic libraries.
Marketing
The Marketing intern is involved with marketing strategies for both the museum and college by updating and managing Corcoran pages on social networking sites, requesting media kits from various publications as needed, maintaining ad archives, and assisting in updating content on the Corcoran web site.
Museum Exhibitions
This intern works collaboratively with the Exhibitions Director to assist with the preparation of upcoming exhibitions to ensure that all details pertinent to the production of the exhibitions are completed on time, including publications, wall text, and labels. This requires working with curators, the registrar, and other departmental interns to complete assignments.
Photography and Media Arts Curatorial
This intern assists with upcoming Photography temporary exhibitions and permanent collection galleries, which will include research, writing, and daily administrative duties in the curatorial office.
Public Relations
The PR intern works directly with the Director of Public Relations to write press releases and media alerts, to distribute monthly and quarterly press information, to supervise television filming and photo-shoots, and to archive media clippings. A background in journalism, public relations, communications, or marketing is preferred.
Museum Registrar’s Office
The Registrar’s Office intern assists with the ongoing inventory of the collection and digital management of the permanent collection and exhibitions. This intern is also involved in exhibition program meetings, art shipments (incoming and outgoing), and exhibition installations and de-installations.
Special Events
The special events department at the Corcoran works closely with the museum and college. This intern assists with event logistics by interacting with departments throughout the institution, external vendors, and clients.
Student Affairs in the College
This intern assists with any current project in the Student Affairs office including the preparation for New Student Orientation, Alumni and Family Weekend, Commencement, and also general office research projects.
