Camp Creativity

Studio C

Studio C campers (ages 11–13) concentrate on skill development and jump into exciting fields such as web design, magazine layout, and cartooning.

Week 1: June 21–25

Morning

Figure Drawing
Study the basics of figure drawing with a clothed model. Learn to capture the human form in space and enhance your drawing ability through gesture, contour, and value studies using a variety of materials.

Portraits in Pastel
The human face has fascinated artists throughout time. Using oil and chalk pastels, campers explore the structure of the head, including the skull, facial muscles, and planes of the face.

Afternoon

Painted Story
Meaningful colors, subtle symbols, and careful composition can help narrate a visual story. Each camper translates their favorite historical, mythological, or fictional story into a series of three paintings.

Week 2: June 28–July 2

Morning

Computer Creations
Learn some of the basic Photoshop skills used by artists and designers to manipulate images. Then experiment with computer drawing and painting to create unique digital works of art.

Building My Website
Campers view sample websites to get ideas for their own, making decisions about look and feel, images, and features. Working with the instructor, they go on to design a homepage and create links to sites that relate to their own interests.

Afternoon

Funky Photo
Point and shoot is not the only way! Campers experience the history and science of photography while producing photographs of their own using pinhole cameras, Polaroid lifts, Xylene transfers, and the Cyanotype process.

Week 3: July 6–9

Morning

Making Mobiles
Learn how artists such as Alexander Calder play with gravity to create sculptures that move in the air. Using paper cut-outs, wire, and other materials, build works of art to suspend from the wall or ceiling.

Standing Sculptures
Make art that stands up for itself, in the tradition of Alexander Calder’s stabiles (but much smaller). Start with the idea of a person, an animal, or a tree, then design and build an abstract version using wire and cardboard.

Afternoon

Installation Art
Installation art excites the mind and all the senses, creating thought-provoking experiences in time and space. Work in teams to construct an artwork for a specific site on camp grounds.

Week 4: July 12–16

Morning

Magazine Launch
Studying top-selling magazines, campers learn elements of design, illustration, and typography using InDesign and other cutting-edge programs. Next, campers create a mock-up for a magazine geared to their interests.

Commercial Art
Learn how companies make you want to buy their products. Using principles of graphic design, campers create their own product line and designs for magazine advertisements, billboards, and television commercials.

Afternoon

Fashion Illustration
Research past styles, observe current trends, and add personal flair to create a fashion lion. Practice illustration techniques and start building your own portfolio of designs for clothing and accessories.

Week 5: July 19–23

Morning

Botanical Drawing
Extend your drawing skills into a world of living color. Learn the basics of botanical illustration and use pencil, colored chalk, and pastel to explore the beautiful organic forms of plants and flowers.

Still Life in Watercolor
Watercolor is one of the most difficult painting mediums to control, but gives some of the most delicate and beautiful results. Learn how to mix color, apply washes, and create effects unique to watercolor as you paint from still life.

Afternoon

Painting with Acrylics
Learn to mix color and practice different methods of acrylic paint application, from transparent stains with a brush to heavy impasto with a palette knife. Subject matter includes still life and landscape.

Week 6: July 26–30

Morning

Creative Beading
Make beautiful jewelry and artwork using beads of many textures, sizes, and shapes. Try out different techniques to make beaded art for wearing, hanging, or mounting.

Fabric Design
Campers learn about dyes, dye painting, block printing, stenciling, and Shibori—a Japanese technique. Working in teams, they design, print, paint, and dye exciting patterns on scarves.

Afternoon

Theater Costume Design
Working from a play or book of your choice, develop a new look for a leading character. Use marker, watercolor, and pen and ink to sketch models, create a design concept, and render costume designs.

Week 7: August 2–6

Morning

Prints of Pop
Inspired by the work of Pop Artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Wayne Thiebaud, campers experiment with printmaking techniques while incorporating themes from today’s popular culture.

Close Up
Get ready for your close-up! Following in the footsteps of artist Chuck Close, campers create unique portraits of family, friends, and themselves.

Afternoon

Book Master
From papermaking to binding, learn all the steps it takes to make a book from start to finish. Campers create journals, albums, and other keepsakes as they learn various bookmaking techniques.

Week 8: August 9–13

Morning

Cartooning
Transform your classroom doodles and rainy day drawings into your own comic book. Campers learn conventions of cartooning, including storyboards, dialogue bubbles, and caricature.

Typography
By studying book jackets, comic books, shape poems, and the work of graffiti artists, campers learn techniques of composition, narration, and how to successfully merge images with words.

Afternoon

Artists in Motion
From Edgar Degas to cartoonist Jack Kirby, capturing the movements of dancers and athletes is a delicate art. Campers use pencil, ink, and pastel to express a sense of life, gesture, and action in their drawings.
