CCA+D: The Eyes of History 2004:
An Exhibition of Award-Winning Photographs by White House Photojournalists

Showcasing the work of the nation’s most distinguished group of photojournalists – the White House News Photographers’ Association (WHNPA) – The Eyes of History 2004 features compelling images documenting the year’s top news stories. Michael Robinson-Chavez of The Washington Post received the Still Photographer of the Year award; Lance Ing of USA Today Live was recognized as the Television Photographer of the Year and Charles MacDonald of The National Geographic Channel was named Editor of the Year. Photographs in the exhibition capture a broad spectrum of human emotion and show a variety of poignant moments. In its fourth year at the Corcoran, the exhibition is on view at the Museum from May 28 through July 5, 2004.

The Corcoran College of Art + Design and the White House News Photographers’ Association entered into a collaborative partnership in February 2001. Drawing on WHNPA photojournalists serve as faculty, the College launched a four-year BFA degree program in Photojournalism. The program is unique in that it is a course of study in photojournalism housed in a college of art. The BFA program provides students with unprecedented access to the many powerful newsmaking venues in the nation’s capital, offering them a rare opportunity to learn how to use their skills creatively and expressively in one of the most competitive professional environments in the world. This year marks the graduation of the first class of Corcoran photojournalists.

The White House News Photographers’ Association is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the interests of Washington’s professional photojournalists in pursuit of their mission. Since 1921, when the WHNPA was formed, members have covered events and activities of major world importance, traveled with presidents and photographed presidents, royalty, diplomats and newsmakers. WHNPA photographers have been at the forefront of video and photographic technology and have recorded some of the world’s great moments.
