On the Campaign Trail
October 17, 2012–November 4, 2012

NIKKI KAHN/WASHINGTON POST; CLIFTON, VA. JULY 14, 2012; BARACK OBAMA, CAMPAIGN STOP AT AT CENTREVILLE HS
MELINA MARA/WASHINGTON POST; STRATHAM, NH; JUNE 2, 2011; MITT ROMNEY, AFTER ANNOUNCING HIS CANDIDACY FOR THE 2012 U.S. PRESIDENTIAL RACE
An evolving range of mediums has been employed to convey and capture the messages, history, and imagination of American political life: from paper broadsides and celluloid buttons to robocalls and social media. The nation “Liked Ike” in the 1950s, woke to “Morning Again in America” during the Reagan years, and voted for “Hope” and “Change” when electing its first African American president. On the Campaign Trail focuses on visual imagery spanning matters such as voter registration and the 2012 U.S. presidential campaign while providing an historical context of various design conventions and mediums used throughout the years. The exhibit features campaign photography from The Washington Post, design work by Corcoran College of Art + Design students, and election-inspired paintings by the homeless men and women who patronize Miriam’s Kitchen.
Reception: Thursday, October 18, 5-7 p.m.
