I get ideas from everywhere, from photographs, from advertising, from dreams, and from other paintings. I figure anything is mine to use, because it resides in my vision, my memory, and my dreams. I take it and transform it into something better.
This exhibition features the drawings, paintings, sculpture, and ceramics of Raya Bodnarchuk, a Corcoran faculty member for over 30 years. Bodnarchuk’s work captures the essential characteristics of her plant, animal, and person subjects with a tender optimism bolstered by her bold formal execution. The artwork on view in Gallery 31 is a small survey of work made during her time at the Corcoran.
American Metal presents a first-ever retrospective survey of the art of Albert Paley, one of the world’s most distinguished metalsmiths. Spanning his remarkable 50-year career, the exhibition traces his work as a jeweller and progresses through his recent, large-scale sculptural projects to reveal the artist’s unique place in American art.
