The Corcoran Gallery of Art seeks a part- or full-time curatorial intern for its Photography and Media Arts department. The Keim Internship is a one-year internship intended for recent graduates with a BA or BFA who seek museum experience prior to entering a graduate program in Art History or a related field.
- Assist curators with special exhibitions, management of the permanent collection, and other projects
- Help with research, editing, and production of texts and publications
- Support with exhibition planning
- Research on objects in the collection and objects proposed for acquisition
- Maintenance of exhibition, collection, and artist files
- Coordination of collection loan forms, loan agreements, and exhibition contracts
- Assistance with general correspondence
- Assistance with programs that pertain to the Photography and Media Arts department
- The ideal candidate will possess a strong knowledge of the history of photography and will have an interest in working with the Corcoran’s photographic collection.
- Previous experience in arts or collections management at a museum, art gallery, alternative art space, or historical collection is strongly preferred.

Library Director
Library
The Library Director is responsible for planning and directing all Library policies and operations and for supervising and evaluating Library staff. The goal is to ensure that the Library supports the research and educational mission of both the College and the Gallery.
- Develops the Library’s short and long-term plans in correlation with institutional goals and objectives and in response to the activities of the College and the Gallery.
- Develops an annual Library budget in correlation with short- and long-term Library goals and, upon approval of the budget by the Dean, monitors implementation of the budget. Tracks and processes invoices.
- Assesses the Library’s services and needs through statistics and surveys, and distributes results as needed.
- Coordinates and executes public relation activities to further Library outreach to the Corcoran community, to fulfill the Library’s mission, and to support the Corcoran’s academic curriculum.
- Establishes collection development policies; selecting materials for purchase and overseeing said purchases.
- Regularly reviews collection for relevance, currency, and deaccessioning decisions.
- Acts as point of contact for potential donors of Library materials; coordinating acceptance and reviewing items for addition to the collection.
- Maintains exhibition catalogue exchange program; monitoring incoming publications, updating exchange-partners list, and monitoring and mailing Corcoran publications.
- Provides point-of-use, telephone, and e-mail reference and research assistance for students, faculty, and staff as well as the general public.
- Provides introduction to library resources to all incoming students (undergraduate and graduate). Provides both general and specialized information literacy classes for groups or individual students, faculty, and staff.
- Performs basic circulation functions as needed.
- Performs basic technical services and visual resources services, etc. as needed
- Establishes general Library policies and procedures; reviewing and revising said procedures as needed.
- Hires, schedules, trains, supervises, and evaluates the Library’s full-time and part-time staff including volunteers and interns. Assists supervising work study students and tracks their paperwork and timesheets.
- Schedules library staff to cover the Library’s hours and provides coverage for staff on sick and vacation leave.
- Plans and directs any modification and/or expansion of the Library’s space.
- Inventories and orders supplies, equipment, and furniture as needed for daily Library functions as well as for special projects.
- Monitors photocopier and computer functions and supplies, ordering service and supplies as needed.
- Acts as the system administrator for the Library’s automation system (SIRSI) and databases.
- Works with vendors and consortia agreements to negotiate pricing and services of the Library’s online products.
- Troubleshoots the Library’s online products and works with vendors to resolve issues.
- Performs system maintenance by running reports and fixing errors on a daily basis.
- Evaluates the Library’s online products on a yearly basis in order to make decisions on renewals.
- Participates in professional development activities in order to gain skills that can be utilized in the Library to further the Library.
- Participates and represents the Corcoran in professional organizations.
- ALA accredited MLS; undergraduate degree in Art History, Studio Art, or related humanities preferred.
- 3-5Three to five years professional experience in an academic art library, including significant management experience, technical services background, library instruction, reference, and collection development.
- Knowledge of electronic information tools and library automation systems.
- Strong public service orientation and interpersonal skills.
- Eexpertise with the SIRSI/DYNIX Symphony online catalog preferred.

Enrollment Assistant
College Registrar’s Office
The Enrollment Assistant is the first line of contact for students, faculty, and staff who require the services of the Office of the Registrar. Primary duties include fielding incoming phone and in-person inquiries, registration assistance for degree and Continuing Education students, supervision of student workers, maintaining office supplies, managing room reservations, coordinate class scheduling changes and cancellations, ensuring data integrity, and enforcing FERPA compliance requirements. Other projects as assigned by the Assistant Registrar(s) and/or Registrar.
- Provide office coverage.
- Respond to phone, e-mail, and in-person inquiries, and field calls as needed.
- Assist with registration and add/drop processing for degree and Continuing Education students.
- Coordinate class scheduling changes and cancellations, including providing daily reports to appropriate college personnel to check for cancellation needs.
- Coordinate waitlists.
- Notify Webmaster of updates to Continuing Education course information.
- Supervises, trains, and schedules student workers, including ensuring office coverage.
- Enforce FERPA compliance requirements.
- Orders office supplies and tracks supply budget.
- File management and records retention management.
- Provide basic course information reports to Chairs/Program Heads and staff as requested.
- Assists with coding of new degree students whose files have been transferred from Admissions.
- Participation in select College events (i.e., open houses) outside of regular hours is required.

- Recommends changes in policy and procedure as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Excellent analytical and customer service skills.

Director of Continuing Education
Office of the Dean
The director of Continuing Education reports to the dean of the College, while maintaining regular consultation with the director of Public Education regarding programs and budgets. Principal responsibilities include the development, implementation, and supervision of degree and non-degree Continuing Education programs for adults, courses offerings and faculty hiring, student advising activities, and all related marketing strategies.
- Oversees all aspects of the Continuing Education programs for adults, including planning, promotion, curriculum development, course scheduling, and resource management. Works with the deans, the administrative chairs and the department program heads to develop curricula and to hire and supervise faculty.
- Oversees administration of the Associate of Fine Arts and Certificate programs, including curricular development, program marketing, and recruitment, registration, and advising of students.
- Works with Public Education staff to coordinate satellite partnerships with McLean Project for the Arts, Glen Echo, and U.S. Botanic Gardens.
- Coordinates production of Continuing Education section of the monthly Night & Day publication.
- Oversees other Continuing Education-related publications such as brochures for the AFA and Certificate programs.
- Oversees planning, promotion, and implementation for special programs such as Master Workshops, Open Houses, Career Advancement programs, and Continuing Education exhibitions.
- Attends some faculty, Chairs Council, and Communications staff meetings.
- Monitors course enrollments and makes decisions regarding non-credit class cancellations. Consults with appropriate administrative chairs and program heads regarding the cancellation of credit courses.
- Analyzes enrollment trends and responds accordingly with curricular additions, revisions and marketing strategies.
- Works with various departments within the organization to create and implement unique cross-departmental programming.
- Develops and fosters relationships in the community and is responsible for “community outreach” for the CE program.
- Closely collaborates with the Marketing and Communications office in developing Continuing Education advertising, PR, and web content.
- Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred. Two to four years of experience in higher education administration preferred, preferably as a developer and director of art-related programs for non-traditional students.
- Direct experience in managing art and design education programs or a substantial understanding of their characteristics and goals.
- Experience with advertising and marketing of programs as well as production of publications and other printed materials.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to strategically and effectively develop successful programs.
- Creative and entrepreneurial program development skills are essential.

Director of Individual Giving and
Membership
Development Department
The Director of Individual Giving and Membership is a senior level position
in the Development Office. The Director serves as a member of the Development
senior management team, which oversees general staff operations and
work collectively to implement the directives of the Vice President
for Development. He/she has management oversight of the Corcoran’s
individual giving program, which includes the Annual Fund and Membership
programs. He/she develops and executes a comprehensive multi-year plan
to achieve the Corcoran’s objectives of Member growth and funding support
across broad levels. He/she is responsible for the development of these
programs, including maintaining a benefits package that retains the
Corcoran’s membership base and keeps the constituency loyal and involved
in the institution’s mission. He/she adjusts strategy to meet changing
market and competitive conditions; makes policy recommendations and
sets a vision for service that continually improves the standard for
the membership experience and is communicated to her team and all volunteers.
He/she devises an annual strategy for ongoing solicitations of existing
and prospective donors and Members and integrates membership priorities
into Museum- and College-wide initiatives. He/she sets and maintains
annual budgets for both programs; and, sets and achieves annual goals
for revenue and philanthropic relationship building.
The Director has management responsibility of the Annual Giving Officer,
Membership Associate and Membership Programs Officer. The Director benchmarks
peer institutions’ efforts to identify best practices that may be employed
by the Corcoran. He/she attends monthly peer roundtable meetings of museum
colleagues and maintains relationships with peers nationwide to keep
abreast of national trends and ideas for program development.
As related to the development, implementation, and management of the
individual program in support of the Museum and College of Art + Design,
the Director of Individual Giving and Membership:
- Works closely with the Manager of Prospect Research to screen and
rate prospects; participating in weekly Prospect Review meetings; and,
attending and staffing events;
- Works closely with he Vice President of Development, Major Gift Officers
and other key Museum and College staff to coordinate individual giving
strategies and initiatives (unrestricted and restricted giving) and
for the cultivation and solicitation of a portfolio of donors and prospects;
- Selects and monitors the performance of consultants and vendors,
as well as manages oversight for copy, design and production of all
program fundraising materials (to include brochures, invitations, email
correspondence, communications series, website presence, etc.);
- Oversees planning and implementation of donor and Member events and
programs and the department calendar for purposes of cultivation and
stewardship and oversees donor and Member communications, including
stewardship, email communications, and other publications;
- Oversees annual direct mail and production schedules and benefit
delivery schedules, as well as in-house telethon efforts and onsite
sales;
- Forms and staffs volunteer committees to assist with solicitation
of Annual Fund prospects, Trustees, Overseers and Women’s Committee
and works with colleagues and volunteer leadership on building the
prospect pool from various internal and external sources; and, directly
cultivates and solicits donors and Members, particularly major donors
to the Annual Fund and Membership programs;
- Prepares written and oral reports (program update and progress toward
goals, revenue and expense reporting, program plans and recommendations)
on a regular basis for the Vice President of Development, President
and Director, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Women’s
Committee, Docent Chair, and other key individuals;
- Works closely with the Director of Advancement Systems to maintain
clear policies and procedures for operations and fulfillment. They
also work in tandem to interpret data to determine success of these
programs and note trends throughout the year, including return on investment
(ROI), cost per dollar raised and market penetration;
- Collaborates with other departments to coordinate programming, communications,
standards of service, and promote the overall Corcoran “brand” to current
and prospective Members;
- Works closely with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations
to provide program and event opportunities and information for corporate
sponsorship solicitations and assist with these solicitations and benefit
fulfillment as needed. He/she also provides strategy ideas for how
membership opportunities can be developed into corporate sponsorships;
- Bachelor’s degree and 5-8 years of experience in a development office.
- Sound knowledge of individual major gift fundraising, membership
service program, customer-relations methods, direct mail programs and
telemarketing.
- Knowledge of marketing principles and emerging e-commerce fundraising
techniques.
- Demonstrated experience heading a membership or development program
and in direct solicitations to individuals at $10,000 and above.
- Demonstrable track record of achieving revenue goals.
- Analytical skills in order to study and make recommendations about
the program. Knowledge of management and personnel practices.
- Skill in budget preparation and control.
- Familiarity with computer software for word processing and database
management.
- Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal skills.

Assistant Curator of Contemporary
Art
Curatorial Department
The Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art assists in the development
and presentation of special exhibitions, related written materials
and catalogues, and ancillary programs in the Contemporary Art department.
The Corcoran defines contemporary art as art created internationally
since 1980, though the Contemporary Art department also has primary
responsibility for art made since 1945. Under the direction of the
Associate Curator, the Assistant Curator is responsible for overseeing
the Corcoran’s permanent collection of post-1945 painting, sculpture,
and installation art. This includes organizing exhibitions drawn from
museum holdings, acquisitions of new work, and loans of collection
artworks. The Assistant Curator works to raise funds and cultivate
interest and donor groups in support of exhibitions, programs, and
collection acquisitions and maintenance. The Assistant Curator, guided
by Curatorial department priorities, works with faculty and students
of the Corcoran College of Art + Design in support of college curricula.
The Assistant Curator also helps develop Gallery-College interactions
leading to the realization of museum projects. The Assistant Curator
helps to establish relationships with the Washington area art community
by doing studio visits with local artists, attending art openings,
and by maintaining dealer/curator contact. The Assistant Curator is
also expected to keep aware of the national and international art scene
via research and travel, when financially possible.
- Assist the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art with the conception,
development, and realization of loan exhibitions of postwar and contemporary
art. Arrange loan agreements; coordinate exhibition contracts; help
with production of catalogues, exhibition texts, labels, and other
printed materials; help develop and coordinate installations of artwork;
produce exhibition-related correspondence.
- In collaboration with the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art,
coordinate ongoing series of small-scale, focused, one- or two-artist
contemporary exhibitions.
- Assist the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, along with Public
Education staff, with the development of ancillary programs related
to exhibitions.
- Research, write, and edit interpretive essays for exhibition publications.
- Present public lectures and gallery tours in support of exhibitions
and educational projects.
- Work with the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art and Development
staff to develop new sources of financial support for exhibition programs,
and assist with the writing of grant proposals to secure funding.
- Serve as liaison with graphic designer on aspects of graphic image
of exhibitions and publications.
- Conduct independent research on topics related to the Corcoran’s
contemporary art activities.
- Under the supervision of the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art,
conceive, research, and develop exhibitions of contemporary art drawn
from the permanent collection.
- Conduct research on objects in permanent collection as well as objects
proposed for acquisition. Respond to research requests from colleagues
and the general public.
- Work with the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art to develop new
sources of funding support for acquisitions, including cultivation
of patrons for future gifts to the collection.
- Help coordinate collection activities with registrars, rights and
reproductions personnel, conservators, art handlers, framers, and photographers,
to support collection loans, research, storage, preservation, publication,
and display.
- Conduct independent research on topics related to the Corcoran’s
contemporary art collections.
- Develop and teach academic courses and/or supervise students in relation
to contemporary art history, exhibition development, and museum studies.
- Present guest lectures and guide tours for students of the College.
- Participate in student portfolio critiques.
Departmental:
- Manage general departmental mail and correspondence related to research
requests from colleagues and the general public.
- Conduct research on and maintain exhibition, collection, and artist
files.
- Contribute to the activities of the Corcoran’s support and membership
groups.
- Coordinate mailing lists, contact lists, and cultivation lists for
audience development and fundraising efforts for the Contemporary Art
department.
- Conduct general research on current events and activities in contemporary
art (requires systematic reading of various art magazines as well as
visits to local and national exhibitions).
- Minimum of an MA in Art History or Museum Studies, with expertise
in contemporary and 20th-century art; or the equivalent professional
experience.
- Proven knowledge of professional museum practices, including realization
of loan and collection exhibitions, history of scholarship and publications
related to the contemporary art field, professional research, patronage,
project fundraising, collection development and planning, and museum
cataloguing.
- At least three years professional museum experience.
- Good oral, writing, and organizational skills.
- Experience teaching art history with an emphasis on contemporary
art.
- Flexibility and an ability to work well with a variety of people.

Vice President of Development
Development Department
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working closely with the
Director and President, the Vice President of Development will provide
leadership, direction, and coordination for a comprehensive fundraising
program. The VP will be expected to design, implement, and manage an
integrated development plan with a primary focus on a significant major
donor initiative. Coordinating with Corcoran leadership, s/he will
strategically plan and manage the development operation to meet short-
and long-term fundraising goals; maintain relationships with sponsors,
donors, volunteers and the Board of Directors; and work hands-on to
cultivate and solicit donations, building a portfolio of individual
donors. The Vice President will manage a team of eight—Director of
Individual Giving, Major Gifts Officers, Director of Corporate and
Foundation Relations, Membership Manager, Research Manager, and other
staff.
- Establish and implement an annual development plan as well as long-term
development goals, strategies, and activities for delivering on the
Corcoran Strategic Plan.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and expand upon relationships
with major individual donors, foundations, and corporations.
- Provide leadership, direction, and management for the Development
team and the organization, creating a professional environment of respect,
motivation, and productivity.
- Identify, track, and deliver on development benchmarks.
- Produce development reports as necessary to track progress against
goals and benchmarks to support the case for donor engagement and investment.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and expand the number of major and
planned giving prospects and donors.
- Work collaboratively on fundraising with Gallery and College leadership
to define priorities and articulate messages to donors.
- Oversee and assess cultivation events and opportunities to deepen
relationships and engage the Corcoran’s donor base.
- Create relevant development tools including materials, correspondence,
and related copy for use in print and on-line.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Marketing and Communications
to create a communications strategy that supports overall development
goals designed to advance programs and priorities of the institution.
- With the Corcoran’s President and Director and the Chief Operating
Officer, serve as a key liaison with the Corcoran Board.
- Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree preferred and a minimum
of eight to ten years’ development experience.
- Proven leadership abilities to effectively fundraise for a complex
institution with an annual fundraising budget in excess of $5 million.
- Demonstrated effectiveness and success in corporate and individual
major gifts fundraising.
- A skilled manager who is able to lead, coach, train, and mentor the
development team and the Corcoran’s Board of Trustees.
- A proven ability to motivate donors and successfully solicit individual
gifts.
- Adept at budget development and financial reporting.
- Outstanding verbal, writing, editing, and computer skills. Detail-oriented
and exacting with a creative bent.
- Ability to interact professionally and credibly with business and
