Black/White by Reuben Breslar at The Athenaeum
Black/White, an exhibition of painting, collage, and installation by Corcoran alumnus Reuben Breslar (BFA Fine Arts, 2006) opened on February 9 at The Athenaeum in Alexandria, Virginia, and will remain on view through March 16.
Breslar conjures a rich interplay of texture, pattern and depth from his monochromatic palette. His large paintings often depict small scenes built from two-dimensional items such as old photographs and magazine pages. Included in the show are several of the binders the artist uses to collect and organize his source material. Gallery visitors are invited to browse the hundreds of tear sheets, photocopied pages, and printed ephemera and get additional perspective on his creative process.
Providing further context to Breslar's work, Dorothea Dietrich and Mark Cameron Boyd, two Corcoran faculty and well-known Washington arts presences, have contributed written commentary for the exhibition.
A Gallery Talk will take place on Saturday, February 23, at 4:30 p.m.

Also called Good Flavor Island, this piece is part of a series

disguising
and revealing my body in verisimilitude and artifice,” Jason writes.

design, and photography. The work will be featured in the Graphis New
Talent Annual 2007 (available in December 2007).

Eric Hibit (BFA, 1998)
Eric's solo debut exhibition, Breakout, is on display from September 6 to October 13 at the Anna Kustera Gallery. In this body of work, the artist creates abstract paintings that become “expanded” through his process of collage using three-dimensional materials. Eric includes a wide range of unconventional materials not expected to be found in a painting—shoes, sawhorses, and stuffed animals. He integrates these objects into a highly personal painting language of gesture and obsessive pattern-making. With a sense of emotional urgency, exuberance, and visual hunger, the artist “wings” the process, allowing spontaneity to direct the evolution of each work’s own unique conclusion. The resulting objects reflect a view into a very personal creative process, a desire of the experiential rather than intellectual, and the invention of an unusual and compelling visual realm.
After earning his BFA degree in Fine Art with honors from the Corcoran in 1998, Eric earned a MFA degree from Yale University in 2003. He has participated in several group exhibitions, including Tact-Traction at Anna Kustera last fall and Toxic at the Max Protetch Gallery. Eric lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
