The Afterglow, Grand Canyon, Arizona
Lucien Powell (American, 1846 -1930)

Landscapes dominated the career of Lucien Powell. His fellow painters in Washington,
D.C., were known for their choice of the genre, especially depictions of regional
landmarks and settings. These painters were loosely associated through membership
in such local art organizations as the Landscape Club, the Society of Washington
Artists, and the Washington Watercolor Club. Like contemporaries Max Weyl, William
Henry Holmes, and James Henry Moser, Powell enjoyed popularity in the Washington
art community. His paintings were widely collected and exhibited at local and
national art exhibitions as well as being lauded in the regional press. The
Afterglow was shown at the Corcoran in the tenth annual exhibition of the Washington Watercolor
Club in 1905, from which, for one hundred dollars, the museum bought it for the
permanent collection. . . .
