Flint Isle, Maine - No.1
John Marin (American, 1870 -1953)

 |

John Marin spent nearly every summer from 1914 until his death in 1953 along
the spectacular rocky shores of Maine, and it became a favorite subject for this
leading American watercolorist. Born in Rutherford, New Jersey, Marin initially
earned his living as an architectural draftsman. Although he had created elegant
watercolor landscapes as a mere teenager, Marin did not pursue his interest in
painting until he entered the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, somewhat
belatedly, at age twenty-nine. . . .
