Charles Demuth was one of the preeminent American artists of the early twentieth century. Along with John Marin, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, and other artists in the avant-garde circle of Alfred Stieglitz, Demuth helped to define a particularly American brand of modernism. By first understanding the underlying principles of the European avant-garde—Cézanne, the cubists, futurism, and German expressionism—and then developing their own individual styles and subjects, these artists created the first uniquely American modern painting. . . .
