Harpers Ferry from Below
Thomas Doughty (American, 1793 -1856)
|
 |

Thomas Doughty was the first American artist to devote himself exclusively
to the genre of landscape painting. The Philadelphia native appears to have
been
largely self-trained. In 1816 he was listed at the Pennsylvania Academy of
the Fine Arts as a “painter,” where he exhibited a landscape, and
in 1820 he committed himself to a career as a landscape painter. He was elected
to the Pennsylvania Academy in 1824 and shortly thereafter was made an honorary
member of the National Academy of Design. . . .
