Forty-two Kids
George Wesley Bellows (American, 1882 -1925)

George Bellows painted Forty-two Kids just three years after arriving in New
York City from his native Columbus, Ohio. In its distinctly modern subject
and vigorous, slashing brushwork, the painting embodies the artist’s stimulation
by his new environment and the excitement of a new century. Bellows’ spirited
yet straightforward depictions of the commonplace, often gritty side of urban
life in an unembellished, robust style align him not only with his teacher
and mentor, Robert Henri, but also with the urban realists led by Henri, the
Ashcan
school. . . .
