A Pastoral Visit established Richard Norris Brooke’s reputation for large-scale
genre subjects and as a “painter of negro subjects,” as he stated
in his autobiographical manuscript Record of Work Serving to some Extent as
a History of my professional Life. The Record lists many works with brief descriptions
by the artist indicating that they depict African American life in rural Northern
Virginia. . . .
