Patrick Henry Bruce, a great-great grandson of Patrick Henry, the famous Revolutionary
War statesman and orator, studied in New York with William Merritt Chase and
Robert Henri. His style crystallized in 1907, four years after his arrival
in Paris, when the Virginia native began mixing with the avante-garde circle
of
Gertrude Stein. He looked closely at the compositional and technical innovations
of Paul Cézanne’s still lifes and learned from his teacher, Henri
Matisse. The colorful abstractions of Orphic cubists Robert and Sonia Delaunay
also impressed him. These modernist influences led Bruce to create his best-known
works. . . .
