His Desires
Dotty Attie (Canadian, b. 1938)

Since the early 1970s, Dottie Attie has excerpted figurative details from
historical paintings and reproduced them in fractured visual narratives that
recontextualize
familiar masterpieces. Based on works by well-known artists such as Courbet
and Ingres, Attie’s multipanel paintings invite us to think critically
about depictions of the body in the history of art. Pairing sensuously rendered
figurative fragments with enigmatic narratives, Attie disrupts conventional
depictions of the female body in order to critique the invisible authority
of the historical source paintings. . . .
