Saul Steinberg’s cartoons have graced the pages of the New Yorker for more
than four decades. So widely recognized are his sophisticated illustrations,
in fact, that his reputation as a fine artist has often been overlooked—which
hasn’t seemed to bother Steinberg a bit. He once said that “not belonging
to either world allowed me to postpone a decision on what to be.” Whether
as a cartoonist or a fine artist, he has rendered a world of subjects, from
the humor of everyday life to the pathos of the ages, with witty aplomb. . . .
