The competition’s objective is to further a critical appreciation for the role of art in American history, especially during the formative years of the country, through study of a specific work or works of American art and culture, broadly understood. The prize competition should encourage academic work that enables Corcoran students to discover how American art has developed alongside American history, and to show the connection. Two $750 prizes will be awarded, one to the best undergraduate essay and one to the best graduate essay.
